Category: The Person of the Holy Spirit.

Welcome to Abound in grace once again and I trust you all had a wonderful weekend, I pray that this week will be filled with love, joy and peace in the Holy Ghost and that you will all be filled with the fulness of God. To-day we conclude our study on “The Person of the Holy Spirit with a practical instruction on how to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

You receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit the same way as you receive salvation, you ask in faith and God will honour your faith. Your will is involved and God will not force the Holy Spirit on you.

You will only receive good things from God. The gift of the Holy Spirit is for every single child of God, but it is for us to receive Him. You do not receive an experience or a power but the Holy Spirit who is a person.

Luke.11:9-13. (KJV) And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

(Mess) Here’s what I’m saying: Ask and you’ll get; Seek and you’ll find; Knock and the door will open. Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat – and – mouse, hide – and – seek game we’re in if your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing – you’re at least decent to your own children. And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?”

James.1:17. (Amp) Every good gift and every perfect (free, large, full) gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of all [that gives] light, in [the shining of] Whom there can be no variation [rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [as in an eclipse].

Acts.2:39. (Amp) For the promise [of the Holy Spirit] is to and for you and your children, and to and for all that are far away, [even] to and for as many as the Lord our God invites and bids to come to Himself.

(Mess) Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is targeted to you and your children, but also to all who are far away – whomever, in fact, our Master God invites.”

This gift is for you.

Receiving the Holy Spirit is not based on emotion or thought, but on the word of God and on faith. You make the decision, ask in faith and you will receive. It is God’s desire for you to be filled with His Holy Spirit so that He can lead you as a Son of God, He wants to teach you and lead you into all truth.

Rms.8:14. (Amp) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

John.14:26. (Amp) But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.

John.16:13. (Amp) But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth – giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].

Take a step in faith and obedience in total surrender to God.

To receive the Holy Spirit all you need to do is ask. If you are sure you are a child of God and have a desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit you can pray the following prayer from your own heart and receive Him.

“Father, I am a believer and your child. Jesus is my Lord and I believe that your word is true. Your word says that if I ask, I will receive your Holy Spirit, so in the Name of Jesus Christ, I ask you to fill me to overflowing with your Holy Spirit. Jesus, baptise me in the Holy Spirit. I believe that I receive and thank you for baptising me. I am now filled with the Holy Spirit. Now Holy Spirit rise up within me as I praise God. I will now speak with other tongues as You give me utterance. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Now let your voice come out but do not try to speak in any language that you know. As you raise your voice and move your lips the Holy Spirit will give you utterance, speak it out.

You will not understand the language, but your spirit by the Holy Spirit is communicating with God.

Develop and pray in this language daily, praise God in it, pray for others with it. You will find that daily your fellowship with God will grow stronger.

You build yourself up in your most holy faith and you keep yourself in the love of God by praying in the Holy Spirit.

Jude.20. (Amp) But you, beloved, build yourselves up [founded] on your most holy faith [make progress, rise like an edifice higher and higher], praying in the Holy Spirit.

By praying in the Holy Spirit we edify ourselves, that is we build ourselves up.

1Cor.14:4. (Amp) He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness].

(Mess) The one who prays using a private “prayer language” certainly gets a lot out of it, but proclaiming God’s truth to the church in its common language brings the whole church into growth and strength.

I would like to share my testimony with you on how I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost in my bedroom one morning. I had been born again for a week or so, the church that I attended believed in the baptism of the Holy Spirit and I had heard the congregation singing and praying in tongues and I really wanted to be able to that, I had a desire for it, one morning I was praying and I said to the Lord, “Lord I really want to speak in that funny language that they speak in the meetings I attend and I raised my hands to the Lord and I prayed the above prayer and just believed that God would do what He said He would do and baptize me with the Holy Spirit, now came the walk of faith, I opened my mouth and started speaking like baby talk, by faith, every day I would just talk baby talk, using my vocal chords, moving my lips and believing that my spirit man was communicating with God, and you something I still do it to this day every day, not knowing what I am saying, I have been doing so since 1982. Oh, the devil has often come to me and said that it is just a bunch of gibberish, a lot of nonsense, I was staying at my brothers at one time and lying on the floor just talking away and the devil said to me “If your brother had to walk in the door right now he would think you had lost your mind and would suggest you get a bit of psychiatric help”, so I just prayed all the louder. Satan will try and stop this gift from God anyway he can, you see no one, no man, no devil and not even you yourself understands what is been said because you are speaking mysteries (or things that are to be revealed) to God. It is in praying in the spirit that you receive revelation of the Word from God. Now there is another gift of the Holy Spirit that works in conjunction with speaking in tongues and that is “the interpretation of tongues and if the Holy Spirit so chooses He can reveal to you what you are praying in tongues, this gift also works by faith, ask Him and may or may not reveal what you are praying about. Anyway dear friends go to a quiet place and just ask the Lord Jesus to baptize you and He will, then just speak in tongues.

I trust this has been of help to all who desire the baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Time to say cheers once again, have a blessed day and I want to say: All thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumph [as trophies of Christ's victory] and through us spreads and makes evident the fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere. Spread the Word of His grace and share His love with all you come into contact with.

Jesus came and gave His life so that you could have life, I urge you to earnestly to consider accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour and by so doing you will be born again into God’s life, right now, where you are bow your head and pray the following prayer by faith and receive the promise of the Father, whoever comes to Me I will in no wise cast out:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

We concluded yesterday by saying that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is what empowers us to witness and to serve effectively in the Kingdom of God. How does a person know if they are baptized in the Holy Spirit?, we saw that every time people received the infilling of the Holy Spirit they spoke with other tongues. Speaking in other tongues is the initial evidence. Now I did not say that you did not have the Holy Ghost if you do not speak in tongues, I said you had not yet received the baptism of the Holy Ghost.

Acts.2:4. (KJV) And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

In giving the great commission, Jesus promised His disciples that they would all speak with new tongues.

Mk.16:16-17. (KJV) He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues.

This is the language of your recreated spirit.

1Cor.14:14. (Amp) He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself, but he who prophesies [interpreting the divine will and purpose and teaching with inspiration] edifies and improves the church and promotes growth [in Christian wisdom, piety, holiness, and happiness].

This language enables you to speak directly to God.

1Cor.14:2. (KJV) For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth Him howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

(Amp) For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].

(Mess) If you praise him in the private language of tongues, God understands you but no one else does, for you are sharing intimacies just between you and him.

Praying in the unknown tongue enables you to pray the perfect will of God, both for your life and for those for whom you pray.

Rms.8:26-27. (Amp) So too the [Holy] Spirit comes to our aid and bears us up in our weakness; for we do not know what prayer to offer nor how to offer it worthily as we ought, but the Spirit Himself goes to meet our supplication and pleads in our behalf with unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance. And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the [Holy] Spirit [what His intention is], because the Spirit interceds and pleads (before God) in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God’s will.

The word used for groaning in the Greek means to; sigh (to utter or express); to groan or to murmer (to utter words), they are Holy Spirit words that our minds do not understand but God does, the Holy Spirit is praying (or interceding) before God on behalf of the saints, He is praying God’s perfect will for the saints. Now this is a great help in our prayer lives as you don’t always know what you should pray, but by praying in your spiritual language by the Holy Spirit you know what you are praying is the perfect prayer because the Word says so, it is all by faith in what the Word says.

When you receive the Holy Spirit, who is a gift from God, one of the signs of His presence is that you will speak in tongues, which your mind will not understand. You are the one who does the speaking. You will use your speech organs, your mouth, your lips and your voice. The Holy Spirit will give you the words, the utterance, but you will have to speak it out.

Throughout the book of Acts we find the believers speaking in tongues when they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Acts.10:46. (KJV) For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Acts.19:6. (KJV) And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

I believe that Jesus spoke in other tongues. In the following scriptures the words used in the Greek for to groan, to sigh deeply, or to murmur, are all related.

John.11:33. (KJV) When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled.

John.11:38. (KJV) Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Mark.7:34. (Mess) Then Jesus looked up in prayer, groaned mightily, and commanded, “Ephphatha!-Open up!”

Mark.8:12. (Amp) And He groaned and sighed deeply in His spirit and said, Why does this generation demand a sign? Positively I say to you, no sign shall be given this generation.

Rms.8:26.

(Mess) Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans.

If Jesus told us to be baptized in the Holy Spirit then surely He would have been, after all He said “As the Father sent Me so I send you”.

That is all I have for now, so I’ll say till next time once again. Have a happy day and bless someone with the Word of truth and don’t forget to spread His love all around.

If you have never made Jesus the Lord of your life then blessed art thou, as to-day salvation has come to your house, if you hear the Holy Spirit voice calling you don’t harden your heart, accept the will of God for your life and say the following from your heart and enter into eternal life through Christ Jesus:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Thank you all for joining me once again in our study of the Person of the Holy Spirit, I pray that we all receive revelation knowledge of His person and that we can know the power that is made available to us through our union with Him, in Jesus name.

You cannot live the Christian life successfully by your own efforts and strength. You need the infilling of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you and give you the power to live as the Word shows you too.

Acts.1:4-5, 8. (Amp) And while being in their company and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, of which [He said] you have heard Me speak. For John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit. But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

1John.4:17. (Amp) In this [union and communion with Him] love is brought to completion and attains perfection with us, that we may have confidence for the day of judgment [with assurance and boldness to face Him], because as He is, so are we in this world.

As Jesus is, so are we in this world. That is something to meditate on “as He is so are we in this world” say that to yourself right now, as He is so am I in this world, go on say it again.

Jesus gave us the great commission.

Jesus did not leave the church powerless when He gave the great commission He promised that signs would follow. Jesus had a powerful supernatural ministry and He wants us to have the same kind of ministry and the same power.

Matt.28:18-20. (Amp) Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be).

(Mess) Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

When Jesus said that all authority (power of rule) has been given to me go and make disciples what He was saying is go in the authority that is mine and train people everywhere in this way of life, what way of life?

John.10:10. (Amp) The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

We are to share the abundant life that belongs to all of God’s family. Remember the word for life is Zoe and it means life as God has life. Share that with everyone you meet far and wide, the power to live in God’s kind of life comes by the Holy Spirit, first you need to be baptized into the Holy Spirit then He can teach you about this life through the Word.

John.20:21. (Amp) Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! [Just] as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you.

Jesus is sending us forth as the Father sent Him, Jesus never did anything of note until He was baptized in the Holy Spirit at the river Jordan, John the Baptist said that he saw the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus in the form of a dove, from that moment on Jesus was empowered to carry out the ministry the Father had given Him to do, “As the Father sends me, so I send you” He said.

Mark.16:15-18. (Amp) And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole human race]. He who believes [who adheres to and trusts in and relies on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] and is baptized will be saved [from the penalty of eternal death]; but he who does not believe [who does not adhere to and trust in and rely on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] will be condemned. And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; they will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well.

Once again we see the word baptize here, it is referring to being baptized into the name of Jesus, as we all understand by now that water baptism cannot save from the penalty of eternal death. These signs follow believers in Jesus name (in His authority we cast out demons, speak in tongues, heal the sick and continue doing what Jesus did in His earthly ministry, we destroy the works of the devil wherever we encounter them by the power of the Holy Spirit, just as Jesus did.

John.17:18. (Mess) In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world, I give them a mission in the world.

This mission that Jesus has given us is not an option, it is a commission, as we obey our Commander in Chief we will see the results.

John.14:21. (Amp) The person who has My commands and keeps them is the one who [really] loves Me; and whoever [really] loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I [too] will love him and will show (reveal, manifest) Myself to him. [I will let Myself be clearly seen by him and make Myself real to him].

John.16:7. (Amp) However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you].

Jesus sent the Holy Spirit not only to empower us to complete our mission but to be in close fellowship with us, our union with the Holy Spirit is one of intimacy, it is getting to know Him, then as He leads we follow and therein lies the power.

This is a description of Jesus’ ministry.

Luke.4:18-19. (Amp) The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity], to proclaim the accepted and acceptable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the free favours of God profusely abound.]

The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus to proclaim the good news, the Holy Spirit sent Jesus to deliver those who are oppressed, the Holy Spirit sent Jesus to proclaim the salvation of God and the free favours of God that profusely abound, not just abound but profusely abound. Jesus has now sent you and I to continue this ministry.

Jesus accomplished this through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Acts10:38. (Amp) How God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the power of] the devil, for God was with Him.

This is the pattern God has chosen for all His people to follow. He intended the church to be powerful. The Holy Spirit is the power of God. The church is a supernatural organism, not a man-made organisation. Without the Holy Spirit (the power of God in the lives of believer), there can be no anointing, no divine guidance, no divine power and no supernatural manifestations. Not only do we as believers need the Holy Spirit in order to understand and operate in the things of God, but the world around us needs to see the power of God in action and to know that God is alive.

When a believer is operating according to the will and purpose of God, in the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit, signs and wonders follow. People’s hearts are opened to receive the Word of God, and then salvation, healing and deliverance follow.

Acts.1:8. (Amp) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

It is God’s purpose and desire for every believer to be filled with the Holy Spirit and power. So receive what God has provided for you through Jesus Christ and become a co – labourer with Him to establish His Kingdom on this earth.

Once again my dear friends it is the week-end so rejoice and be glad in it; have a really blessed day and don’t forget to share the good news and His love with all you meet.

To be able to receive all that we have been speaking of you need to be born again as that is the entrance gate to all that God has for us. Right now wherever you are bow your head and pray the following prayer and accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour this instant:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Acts.1:8. (Amp) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

The power for Christian living.

You cannot live the Christian life by your own power or effort, you need the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you and give you the power to live the Word.

John.14:16-17. (Amp) And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever, the Spirit of Truth, Whom the world cannot receive (welcome, take to its heart), because it does not see Him or know and recognize Him. But you know and recognize Him, for He lives with you [constantly] and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Godhead, as much God as the Father and Jesus. It was the power of the Holy Spirit that caused you to be born again when you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. At that stage however, you were not filled with the Holy Spirit

From the following scriptures it is clear that only after a person is born again, can he or she be filled or baptised with the Holy Spirit and that the new birth and the baptism or infilling with the Holy Spirit are two distinctly separate events in the life of a believer.

Acts.2:4. (Amp) And they were all filled (diffused throughout their souls) with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other (different, foreign) languages (tongues), as the Spirit kept giving them clear and loud expression [in each tongue in appropriate words].

This event took place after Jesus had ascended; now bear with me awhile, the disciples were all locked away in the upper room for fear of what could happen to them for being followers of Jesus. Let us take a look at when they actually got born again:

John.20:20-22. (Amp) So saying, He showed them His hands and His side. And when the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy (delight, exultation, ecstasy, rapture). Then Jesus said to them again, Peace to you! [Just] as the Father has sent Me forth, so I am sending you. And having said this, He breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!

The disciples in their walk with Jesus before the crucifixion were not born again, they could not have been as Jesus had not yet died and paid the price for sin, but if you remember when Jesus asked who do you say that I am, Peter confessed that Jesus was the son of God, but that didn’t get him born again, when Jesus appeared to them as we see in John.20 they were over joyed to see Him, He then breathed on them and said receive the Holy Ghost, this is when the Holy Spirit entered into them and got them born again, remember, we are born again by the Word and the Spirit, Jesus spoke the Word and the Spirit regenerated them at that moment. Then we see in Acts.2:4 that they were filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke in other tongues, so they first received the Holy Spirit in the new birth and then they experienced the in filling or baptism of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.

Look at what Peter says in:

Acts.2:38. (Amp) And Peter answered them, Repent (change your views and purpose to accept the will of God in your inner selves instead of rejecting it) and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Notice Peter say be baptize everyone in the name of Jesus Christ, once again remember what the word baptize means, to be placed into, to be made one with, he is not talking about water baptism, he is saying be born again, be made one with Jesus, then you will receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Water baptism cannot forgive sin, only the blood of Jesus can.

Acts.8:15-17. (Amp) And they came down and prayed for them that the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit; For He had not yet fallen upon any of them, but they had only been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then [the apostles] laid their hands on them one by one, and they received the Holy Spirit. However, when Simon saw that the [Holy] Spirit was imparted through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he brought money and offered it to them saying, Grant me also this power and authority, in order that anyone on whom I place my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.

Here we see that the Samaritans were already born again, they had been baptized into the name of Jesus and the apostle’s laid hands on them and they were filled with the Holy Ghost, now it doesn’t say that they spoke with other tongues, yet Simon saw that they received the Holy Ghost, you can’t see the Holy Spirit He is a spirit being so there was some kind of tangible evidence, in all the other scripture where people received, the evidence was that they spoke with other tongues.

Acts.9:17. (KJV) And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Acts.10:37-46. (Amp) The [same] message which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, starting from Galilee after the baptism preached by John – how God anointed and consecrated Jesus of Nazareth with the [Holy] Spirit and with strength and ability and power; how He went about doing good and, in particular, curing all who were harassed and oppressed by [the power of] the devil, for God was with Him. And we are [eye and ear] witnesses of everything that He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. And [yet] they put Him out of the way (murdered Him) by hanging Him on a tree; but God raised Him to life on the third day and caused Him to be manifest (to be plainly seen), not by all the people but to us who were chosen (designated) beforehand by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead. And He charged us to preach to the people and to bear solemn testimony that He is the God – appointed and God – ordained Judge of the living and the dead. To Him all the prophets testify (bear witness) that everyone who believes in Him [who adheres to, trusts in, and relies on Him, giving himself up to Him] receives forgiveness of sins through His name. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all who were listening to the message. And the believers from among the circumcised [the Jews] who came with Peter were surprised and amazed, because the free gift of the Holy Spirit had been bestowed and poured out largely even on the Gentiles. For they heard them talking in [unknown] tongues (languages) and extolling and magnifying God.

Acts.19:1-6. (KJV) And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John’s baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And all the men were about twelve.

These men where all water baptized, then Paul baptized them in the name of Jesus, got them born again and after they were born again he laid hands on them and they were baptized in the Holy Ghost. How did Paul know they had received the Holy Ghost? They spake in other tongues.

John.1:33. (Amp) And I did not know Him nor recognize Him, but He Who sent me to baptize in (with) water said to me, Upon Him Whom you shall see the Spirit descend and remain, that One is He Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.

If you read carefully through the scripture you will find that whenever it speaks of water baptism it speaks of John’s baptism or water baptism. Don’t mix the baptism’s up. Jesus is the one who administers the Holy Spirit baptism.

Thank you for joining me once again and I pray that this study will be a blessing to you, have a very happy day and share the Word and spread the love everywhere you go.

Jesus came a gave His life so that you could have life, I urge you to earnestly to consider accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour and by so doing you will be born again into God’s life, right now, where you are, bow your head and pray the following prayer by faith and receive the promise of the Father, “whoever comes to Me I will in no wise cast out”:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Welcome to Abound in Grace. To-day we will continue with our study of the person of the Holy Spirit by looking at “The ministry of the Holy Spirit”. Yesterday we established the fact that He is a person and that there are certain attributes ascribed to him. To-day we discuss his work concerning us:

He convicts us of sin (the rejection of Christ).

John.16:8-9. (Amp) And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in Me [trust in, rely on, and adhere to Me].

When I say that the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin I do not mean that every time we do wrong the Holy Spirit is there convicting us and condemning us as the only sin he convicts us of is the sin of the rejection of Jesus as Lord. Jesus said He will convict the world because they do not believe in Him, It was the Holy Spirit that convicted you, and that opened the door for you to accept Jesus and get born again. The Message translation puts nicely “He’ll show them that their refusal to believe in me is their basic sin”.

He regenerates us.

John.3:5-6. (Amp) Jesus answered, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, unless a man is born of water and [even] the Spirit, he cannot [ever] enter the kingdom of God. What is born of [from] the flesh is flesh [of the physical is physical]; and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Jesus said that a man must be born of water, He is not saying that we have to be water baptized to enter the Kingdom, when He mentions water He is actually speaking of the Word.

Eph.5:26. (Amp) So that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the Word.

Titus.3:5-7. (Amp) He saved us, not because of any works of righteousness that we had done, but because of His own pity and mercy, by [the] cleansing [bath] of the new birth (regeneration) and renewing of the Holy Spirit, which He poured out [so] richly upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. [And He did it in order] that we might be justified by His grace (by His favor, wholly undeserved), [that we might be acknowledged and counted as conformed to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action], and that we might become heirs of eternal life according to [our] hope.

The minute you accepted Jesus as Lord the Holy Spirit took up residence in your inner man and regenerated you, it was the Word and the Spirit that got you born again.

He instructs us through the scripture.

1Cor.2:12-13. (Amp) Now we have not received the spirit [that belongs to] the world, but the [Holy] Spirit Who is from God, [given to us] that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts [of divine favor and blessing so freely and lavishly] bestowed on us by God. And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language [to those who possess the Holy Spirit].

John.16:13. (Amp) But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].

He helps us in prayer.

And He Who searches the hearts of men knows what is in the mind of the [Holy] Spirit [what His intent is], because the Spirit intercedes and pleads [before God] in behalf of the saints according to and in harmony with God’s will.

We will discuss how He helps us in prayer a little later in the study. In 1Cor.2:12-13 it says that “we are to combine spiritual truths with spiritual language” this will also be discussed in a later study.

He comforts us and assists us.

John.14:16, 26. (Amp) And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever. But the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, Standby), the Holy Spirit, Whom the Father will send in My name [in My place, to represent Me and act on My behalf], He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to recall (will remind you of, bring to your remembrance) everything I have told you.

John.16:7,13. (Amp) However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counsellor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. But when He, the Spirit of Truth (the Truth-giving Spirit) comes, He will guide you into all the Truth (the whole, full Truth). For He will not speak His own message [on His own authority]; but He will tell whatever He hears [from the Father; He will give the message that has been given to Him], and He will announce and declare to you the things that are to come [that will happen in the future].

2Cor.1:3-4. (Amp) Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of sympathy (pity and mercy) and the God [Who is the Source] of every comfort (consolation and encouragement), who comforts (consoles and encourages) us in every trouble (calamity and affliction), so that we may also be able to comfort (console and encourage) those who are in any kind of trouble or distress, with the comfort (consolation and encouragement) with which we ourselves are comforted (consoled and encouraged) by God.

He leads and guides us into all truth.

Rms.8:14-17. (Amp) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For [the Spirit which] you have now received [is] not a spirit of slavery to put you once more in bondage to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption [the Spirit producing sonship] in [the bliss of] which we cry, Abba (Father)! Father! The Spirit Himself [thus] testifies together with our own spirit, [assuring us] that we are children of God. And if we are [His] children, then we are [His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His inheritance with Him]; only we must share His suffering if we are to share His glory.

We have a glorious inheritance in Christ Jesus, we are heirs to the throne of God the Father and it is the Holy Spirits function to show us our inheritance and lead and guide us into the fullness of what is rightfully ours as sons of God and joint heirs with Jesus.

(Mess) God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go! This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike “What’s next, Papa?” God’s Spirit touches our spirits and confirms who we really are. We know who he is, and we know who we are: Father and children. And we know we are going to get what’s coming to us, an unbelievable inheritance! We go through exactly what Christ goes through. If we go through the hard times with him, then we’re certainly going to go through the good times with him!

Thank you for joining me to-day and I trust the Word has spoken to your heart, till next time, and don’t forget to spread the Word and share His love with a needy world, the world needs you.

I pray that the Holy Spirit has spoken to your heart this day, if you are not born again then it is time for you to enter into the glorious experience of knowing God personally and having His Spirit as your closest friend and helper, for that to happen you must be born again so right there where you are just take a minute, bow your head and say the following prayer from your heart and receive His gift of eternal life:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Welcome once again to Abounding Grace, to-day we will continue in our study of the “Person of The Holy Spirit. I pray that the Father gives us insight and revelation of the person of the Holy Spirit so that we can understand just how important He is to our daily lives and that we can comprehend the power that is made available to us through Him. Amen.

The first thing we are to understand is that the Holy Spirit is not some unseen force floating around, He is not an “It” but a person.

John.15:26. (Amp) But when the Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, Whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth Who comes (proceeds) from the Father, He [Himself] will testify regarding Me.

Please take note that when Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit he used the personal pronoun “He”, some think of Him as some sort of an electrical current, some spooky kind of thing, yet in the Bible he is shown forth as a person.

  • He is God, a member of the Godhead and He is holy.

Matt.28:19. (Amp) Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Here Jesus includes the Holy Spirit in the God head of the Father and the Son. He imparts holiness to us and we need to realise who he is. The Greek word is Paraclete that means comforter, one called alongside to help and as a person I communicate with him and he with me. In the natural realm we find out what a  person is like by what they say and do, the same with the Holy Spirit.

He is the Spirit of truth that the world cannot see or understand but we as the family of God can know Him and recognize Him and there’s one thing for certain He will never leave us, He lives with us constantly and He lives in us.

He is the great teacher, our heavenly Father has given Him to us to teach us the Word, when you hear a scripture inside of you, talking to you,  that’s Him bringing things that the Father has said to your rememberance. As the comforter he is our counselor, helper, intercessor, advocate, strengthener and standby, we can take part of all these ministries in our daily lives.

  • The Holy Spirit has an intellect, He has a mind and He has understanding.

1Cor.2:10-13. (Amp) Yet to us God has unveiled and revealed them by and through His Spirit, for the [Holy] Spirit searches diligently, exploring and examining everything, even sounding the profound and bottomless things of God [the divine counsels and things hidden and beyond man's scrutiny]. For what person perceives (knows and understands) what passes through a man’s thoughts except the man’s own spirit within him? Just so no one discerns (comes to know and comprehend) the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have not received the spirit [that belongs to] the world, but the [Holy] Spirit Who is from God, [given to us] that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts [of divine favour and blessing so freely and lavishly] bestowed on us by God. And we are setting these truths forth in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the [Holy] Spirit, combining and interpreting spiritual truths with spiritual language [to those who possess the Holy Spirit].

  • He has emotions and feelings. He can be grieved, you can vex, sadden and offend Him, you can give Him joy.

Eph.4:30. (Amp) And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God [do not offend or vex or sadden Him], by Whom you were sealed (marked, branded as God’s own, secured) for the day of redemption (of final deliverance through Christ from evil and the consequences of sin).

  • He has a will, He decides things.

1Cor.12:11. (Amp) All these [gifts, achievements, abilities] are inspired and brought to pass by one and the same [Holy] Spirit, Who apportions to each person individually [exactly] as He chooses.

There are nine gifts of the Spirit and as He chooses so they are distributed. We see that He made the decision that Paul should not preach the Word in Asia.

Acts.16:6.  (Amp) And Paul and Silas passed through the territory of Phrygia and Galatia, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Word in [the province of] Asia.

There are certain attributes of the Holy Spirit.

  • He is omniscient. He has infinite knowledge, he is all knowing.

  • He is omnipotent.

Luke.1:35. (KJV) And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

  • He is omnipresent.

Ps.139:7-10. (KJV) Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

(Mess) Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? To be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, you’d find me in a minute, you’re already there waiting!

My dear friends what a friend He is, sent to us by our ever loving heavenly Father to help us through life’s journey and give us victory over every obstacle. I encourage you to deepen your relationship with Him and listen to Him as He will guide you in all the affairs of life. Have a blessed day and share the Word of power with all you meet, spread His love around lavishly and be a blessing to all.

You too can have the Holy Spirit as your friend and guide, He is just waiting for you to yield to His prompting and accept Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, if you hear His voice don’t harden your heart to-day, pray this prayer right now wherever you are and accept the grace of God:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Today we will start a study on the Person of the Holy Spirit, we have already discussed that when Jesus said that we were to make disciples and baptize in them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost that He was telling us to introduce or make them one with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. So to-day I would like to start by introducing you to the Holy Spirit.

After Jesus was raised from the dead He appeared to his disciples numerous times, for the space of forty days He was with them teaching them about the kingdom of God. Yet they still needed something from God before they would be ready to go out and preach the gospel. They needed to be baptised in the Holy Spirit.

Acts.1:1-5. (Amp) In the former account [which I prepared], O Theophilus, I made [a continuous report] dealing with all the things which Jesus began to do and to teach until the day when He ascended, after He through the Holy Spirit had instructed and commanded the apostles (special messengers) whom He had chosen. To them also He showed Himself alive after His passion (His suffering in the garden and on the cross) by [a series of] many convincing demonstrations [unquestionable evidences and infallible proofs], appearing to them during forty days and talking [to them] about the things of the kingdom of God. And while being in their company and eating with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised, of which [He said] you have heard Me speak. For John baptized with water, but not many days from now you shall be baptized with (placed in, introduced into) the Holy Spirit.

1Thess.5:23. (KJV) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1Cor.3:16. (Amp) Do you not discern and understand that you [the whole church at Corinth] are God’s temple (His sanctuary), and that God’s Spirit has His permanent dwelling in you [to be at home in you, collectively as a church and also individually]?

We as God’s people ought to realise that we are in a spiritual battle, not a physical one and need spiritual weapons. We need the fullness of the power of the Holy Spirit to be able to overcome in this battle.

2Cor.10:3-5. (Amp) For though we walk (live) in the flesh, we are not carrying on our warfare according to the flesh and using mere human weapons. For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds, [Inasmuch as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One).

Eph.6:11-12. (Amp) Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil. For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

This power comes from the Holy Spirit.

Acts.1:8. (Amp) But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.

When we are born again the Holy Spirit comes to live in us, but there is a subsequent experience of being baptised in the Holy Spirit.

Acts.2:1-4. (KJV) And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

This subsequent experience may closely follow salvation.

The new birth:

John.4:14 (Amp) But whoever takes a drink of the water that I will give him shall never, no never, be thirsty any more. But the water that I will give him shall become a spring of water welling up (flowing, bubbling) [continually] within him unto (into, for) eternal life.

In the above scripture Jesus is referring to the born again experience and He says that it shall be a spring of water welling up within us to eternal life; but in John 7. He is referring to the baptism of the Holy Spirit and He changes the terminology from springs of living water to rivers of water continuously flowing from our inner man (the spirit man), there seems to be a lot of controversy over this issue, but if believer’s would just set aside all the arguments concerning this teaching that Jesus gave, (it is one of the doctrines of Christ found in Hebrews 6) and take the Word of God as final authority on this issue the arguments would cease and then we would be coming into the unity of the faith spoken of in the Word of God.

John.7: 37-39. (Amp) Now on the final and most important day of the Feast, Jesus stood, and He cried in a loud voice, If any man is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink! He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water. But He was speaking here of the Spirit, Whom those who believed (trusted, had faith) in Him were afterward to receive. For the [Holy] Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified (raised to honor).

I would like to bring to your attention that Jesus is preparing to complete His mission here on earth and He is telling His disciples that they were not to get involved with any form of ministry until they had received the Holy Spirit that would enable them to effectively preach the Gospel.

I want to thank you for joining me once again this week in a study of the Word concerning His gift to us, the precious comforter and friend, the Holy Spirit. I trust that you will be thoroughly edified. To-morrow we will discuss the person of the Holy Spirit. Have a blessed day and don’t forget to spread His Word of grace and His gracious love all around.

I would like to give you an opportunity to become a part of the family of God through your acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour by praying the following prayer from your heart and receiving the precious gift of eternal life from our God and Father:

“Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from dead, I shall be saved. Therefore, Father, I confess that Jesus is my Lord. I make Him Lord of my life right now. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. I renounce my past life with Satan. “I thank You for forgiving me of all my sin. Jesus is now my Lord, and I am a new creation. Old things have passed away. Now all things become new in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

Life is a journey in God so sit back and enjoy the ride.
